Summary

Overview 

The Strategic Credit Products Department, Americas Division (“SCAD”) offers leveraged financed solutions to clients including Private Equity firms related to large-cap and middle market LBO transactions and to support Asset Manager clients including large BDCs and other institutional lenders involved in middle market leveraged finance transactions. The group arranges, structures, distributes and holds a portion of risk on all of its transactions. Products include leveraged and syndicated loans, fixed income, securitization and asset backed financings.

The Portfolio Management Group supports the bank’s leveraged loan business. The Group is primarily responsible for monitoring the credit quality for portfolio companies owned by Private Equity firms and also manages any amendment and underwriting activities to support these businesses during the tenor of the bank’s relationship

What is the Opportunity? 

SMBC hosts a 10-week Summer Intern Program for undergraduate students who will have the opportunity to work on teams, be exposed to significant firm-wide projects within their respective business areas, and support a range of deals with our clients.

Our Summer Intern Program offers a hands-on experience in one of the following business area:

  • Strategic Credit Products, Portfolio Management

We offer many different opportunities including building financial models, developing client presentations, conducting research, and observing client meetings – all to improve their understanding of the global banking industry. Our internship program culminates in a collaborative case study where the interns will apply the analytical, communication, and presentation skills they have developed over the course of the summer.

Our Summer Intern Program is an excellent gateway to our full-time Analyst Program.

Responsibilities

How Our Program Works

Our Summer Intern Program is designed for students who completed their junior year.

This 10-week Program Commences In June And Includes

  • Orientation
  • Training with on-the-desk experience
  • Senior Speaker Series
  • Japanese cultural activities
  • Social networking activities
  • Case Study project presented to senior leaders
  • Volunteer Day with a local nonprofit
  • Mentorship opportunity with both a junior and senior mentor at SMBC

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess or demonstrate the following personal and professional attributes:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree from an accredited university with a graduation date ofDecember 2021 or May 2022; excellent academic record
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with specific ability to communicate concepts and ideas concisely
  • Financial modeling/valuation and analytical skills; keen interest in finance and markets
  • Ability to comfortably interact with clients in a professional and mature manner
  • Outstanding ethics, integrity, and judgment
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Comfort in and commitment to a strong teamwork environment
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, self-driven, and motivated
  • Advanced Word, Excel, and PowerPoint skills and the ability to quickly learn new software applications
