Applied Research Data Science Intern – Summer 2021

We are now looking for talented and driven individuals to accelerate our efforts and be a major part of our data-centric culture. It is expected that this person understands scientific methodologies, has strong problem solving skills, and is comfortable with implementing algorithms. Ideally this individual will understand the fundamentals of experimentation, analytic thinking and have experience with modeling data in an area such as machine learning, optimization or time series analysis. Successful candidates will exhibit technical acumen on inference and algorithms, and the business savvy to use these technical skills to drive better business decision-making.

Responsibilities
Work with a team of high-performing analytics, data science professionals, and cross-functional teams to identify business opportunities, and develop algorithms and methodologies to address them.
Analyze large-scale structured, and unstructured data.
Develop methodologies to enhance LinkedIn’s product, and platform capabilities.
Conduct in depth and rigorous research focused on solving business problems relevant to LinkedIn.
Develop and implement methodologies and algorithms in areas such as machine learning and causal inference to drive member value and customer success.

Promote and enable adoption of technical advances in Data Science; elevate the art of Data Science practiced at LinkedIn.
Initiate and drive projects to completion with minimal guidance.
Communicate findings to senior leaders and evangelize data-driven business decisions.
This is a full-time internship role based in Sunnyvale, CA, or San Francisco, CA
This internship will take place between May – September 2021

Basic Qualifications

Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in a quantitative discipline: statistics, operations research, computer science, informatics, engineering, applied mathematics, economics, etc. and returning to the program after the completion of the internship
Working knowledge in at least one programming language (e.g., R, Python, Java, Ruby, or Perl)
Experience in applied statistics and statistical modeling in at least one statistical software package, preferably R/Python.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with manipulating massive-scale structured and unstructured data.
Experience with Hadoop or other MapReduce paradigms, and associated languages such as Pig, Hive, Spark, Scala etc.
Working knowledge of Unix and Unix-like systems, git and code review.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to synthesize, simplify and explain complex problems to different types of audience, including executives
Research experience related to one of the following domains: Experimentation and causal inference, Machine Learning, Operations Research, Time Series Analysis, Computational Social Science or related area.
