This unique opportunity is part of the Mechanical Fabrication and Test Section which maintains technical support facilities and resources that provide the services required to fabricate, assemble, and test electro-mechanical developmental and flight hardware. This Section develops and matures equipment and technologies, which enable and enhance our fabrication and environmental test capability for current and future missions.

As a Pressure Systems Intern you will be working for JPL’s Pressure System Services Group which certifies and maintains certification of all of the lab’s pressure systems. Members of this team perform engineering analyses and life assessments on a variety of pressure systems using the appropriate consensus code (i.e. ASTM, ASME, API, MIL). They assess configuration, operability and safety risk of each pressure system per JPL/NASA standards and they evaluate new pressure system designs prior to installation for optimal functionality while meeting pressure systems safety requirements.

What It Takes

  • Must be currently enrolled at least half-time at a local accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Material/Science, Physics, Robotics, Structural Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • Must be available to work part time during the school year 8-30hrs.
  • Minimum GPA 3.0/4.0
  • Coursework providing an understanding and application of standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques in mechanical systems including structures, configuration, mechanisms, structural analysis, and integration and test.
  • General knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in mechanical design.
  • Willingness and flexibility to receive direction and mentoring from other personnel within the organization

  • Working knowledge in pressure systems engineering
  • Any knowledge of Non-Destructive Testing methods to include Visual Testing (VT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), or Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Any experience working with databases
