01 The 20-year CS boom hits its first major downturn

A decade ago, computer science lectures packed lecture halls. Data from the US National Science Foundation (NSF) bears this out: CS enrollment more than doubled between 2014 and 2024.

While you stay up late manually writing CRUD code, large language models can churn out basic architecture and debug tests in seconds. Companies are pragmatic: if AI can handle entry-level coding tasks, why pay top dollar for new grads who only copy and paste code?

The second is the big tech downturn and the ticking visa clock.

David J. Malan, the renowned Harvard professor, has long noted that broad tech workforce cuts were already underway.

New Grad hiring at major tech companies has shrunk by more than half since 2019. For international students, this carries heavy implications. 👉 Want to pursue the trending FDE (Field-facing AI Engineer) path? Beyond coding, you must parse client requirements, possess business acumen, and communicate fluently in English.

Ask yourself: What is your “X”? Without a solid domain pairing, you remain a replaceable cog that AI can easily substitute.

2️⃣ Start your job search far earlier. Do not wait until graduation

Top tech firms now begin talent recruitment as early as undergraduate freshman years. Even high-school outreach programs exist, such as Microsoft LEAP and Amazon Future Engineer.

For instance, Google’s 2026 New Grad SWE roles closed applications right after August 30 this year. Tech openings appear briefly and fill fast; delay, and you watch others land offers.

3️⃣ Mass applications deliver high effort and low returns

Why do candidates with a 4.0 GPA and hundreds of solved algorithm problems still get no response after submitting resumes into application portals?

Over half of the best roles at Silicon Valley big companies are never posted publicly. For the remaining public openings, HR teams receive thousands of mass applications, which get filtered automatically by resume screening systems.

Without a referral or internal endorsement, your resume will never reach hiring managers. You end up competing against thousands for roles that may already be spoken for.
