How to choose career coaching for F-1 / OPT students

Use the same five checks for every provider, including MentorX: defined outcomes, a process that accounts for immigration status, verifiable employer access, human review of AI output, and written refund terms. Give more weight to written answers than testimonials. This is not legal advice.

Step 1: Name the outcome

Are you paying for an internship, a full-time search, more interviews, or specific skills? Ask how long the service lasts and what it excludes.

Examples from the MentorX FAQ (for illustration): Career Navigator-Pro lasts about 18 months; Career Navigator-VIP lasts about 6 months. Your contract defines what you are buying.

Step 2: Test status literacy

A responsible provider treats OPT timelines and sponsorship as constraints and refers CPT/OPT questions to your DSO. A claim such as “we guarantee H-1B” is a warning sign.

Step 3: Inspect employer access

Find out whether a referral is an introduction to a named person or simply a batch of links. Ask how the provider filters roles based on employers’ willingness to hire international candidates.

Step 4: Check the AI + human loop

AI can help with drafts. Mass-sending applications without human review is far riskier, especially while you are on OPT.

MentorX’s public FAQ mentions SuperAcademy tools such as diagnostics, dashboards, mentor co-coaching, and role matching. Ask who reviews the output before an application is sent.

Step 5: Read the refund language

If outcomes are marketed, get refund triggers in writing.

MentorX public FAQ (subject to contract; terms vary by program): for landed-internship programs, about $4,000 to $5,000+ after fees if there is no internship offer; for landed full-time programs, about $19,500 after fees if there is no full-time offer; about $23,400 if there is neither. Many programs without outcome provisions are largely non-refundable. Read your agreement carefully.

Step 6: Compare providers over 48 hours

Shortlist two or three providers and send each one the same five questions in writing. Compare their answers, then start with an assessment or kit if that option is available.
